As available space was extremely limited for stairs access to the converted attic, a compact, lightweight free-standing structure was called for. The lower end spirals around 110° the top five steps are cut into an existing wall Narrow patent glazing between the rafters lets in light and gives extra headroom. Three linear steel girders form the stairs frame: two pairs of flat steel girders and the round steel handrail. Against the party wall a stepped, projecting support caters for acoustic separation. A solid beech bottom step connects all the elements together. All steelwork is bright-finished, rolled and lacquered. The upper section has two solid wood strings. The stairs are self-supporting, so as not to endanger a delicate vaulted ceiling below.
