Sulzberg is a community east of Bregenz in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg with a population of approximately 1,700 people. At its centre, 1,000 meters up on the mountain peak, one can still find traditional Bregenzerwald houses. These are large timber houses — usually three stories — with low-pitched roofs and shingle-clad facades that are protected from the rain by a projecting ledge at each floor level.

This building typology served as inspiration for the house designed by architect Juri Troy for a family of four on the outskirts of the village centre. The house rises four storeys up from the hillside; on the upper side of the slope it appears more modest with only two storeys. The owner’s apartment (approximately 250 m2) extends over the two upper levels, below which there are three smaller flats ranging in size from 41 to 56 m2. These flats can be rented out as holiday apartments.
