The large, steeply sloped shed roof of the residential house in Kanazawa already indicates that the city experiences significant rainfall. The house is situated in Ishikawa Prefecture northwest of Tokyo, a region receiving some of the greatest amounts of precipitation in Japan. Architect Shota Nakanishi designed a building that incorporates elements of traditional Japanese architecture while interpreting them in a modern and unconventional way. It replaces an existing building with garage, which were demolished. As the dominant design element of the house, the sheet metal clad roof forms a strong contrast to the neighbouring tile-covered pitched roofs and their deep overhangs.
