A sculpted cube occupies the southern edge of the international building exposition in Wilhelmsburg, a district in Hamburg. The designs for these buildings demonstrate ideas about urban forms of living for the twenty-first century. Adjaye Associates won the competition hosted by the IBA with a proposal for a house whose structural system consists of prefabricated solid-timber floor decks and walls. The floor plan is organised around the circulation core, which extends the entire width of the building; two units of equal size bracket the core. For the realisation of the project, Planpark, an office based in Hamburg, adapted Adjaye Associates’ design to comply with Hamburg’s fire-protection regulations. Following these changes there are three units per level and a more compact circulation core. It provides access to nine flats (ranging in size from 47 to 124 m2). In addition there are two maisonette units; they have entrances on both levels. All units are equipped with a loggia. These are situated at different positions on the different levels: the differentiated facades underscore the design’s three-dimensional qualities.
