The extension of the Munich reinsurance company’s headquarters is a refurbished structure dating from the 1970s. Externally it is clad with angled panes of glass that reflect the surrounding buildings, thereby helping to break down the volume of this monolithic structure and to integrate it into the urban fabric. The creation of new routes and visual links serves a similar purpose. The building was extended to the south to form a salient corner structure, and the roof storey was rebuilt to a reduced size. The floor slabs were cut away on one side, opening up the dark centre of the former three-bay layout with an L-shaped courtyard that also articulates the street front and marks the set-back entrance.
