Straw, used as thermal insulation, is concealed by the timber facade of a nursery school in the 13th arrondissement of Paris. Within this project, the client and the planners placed particular value on sustainable and resource efficient means of construction. This refers to the shape of the building, the materials selection, the construction type and the overall carbon footprint. Surrounded by twelve storey apartment blocks, the small, three storey building nevertheless stands out, due to its staggered volume adorned with green roof terraces. It almost resembles a topographical element. The upper floors feature timber construction and a lightweight building envelope comprised of larch slats, forming a stark contrast with the solid base.
