In the Senegalese town of Bambey, the two main sources of income are animal husbandry and the cultivation of peanuts. The extreme climatic conditions in the Sahel and constant infrastructural deficiencies mean that nearly 30,000 inhabitants live under the most difficult conditions.

An educational initiative supported by the World Bank aims to achieve an ongoing improvement of the situation in the country's universities. The new lecture-hall complex for the Université Alioune Diop de Bambey (UADB) was designed by the Spanish office IDOM, which is active on a international scale. Their concept foresaw a haven for 1,500 students implemented with simple constructional means.
