Based on classic forms, the three-storey library exhibits the hall-type which evolves mainly from the internal organization of a nave and two aisles. This concept is revealed externally by the three doublepitch roofs. The aisles accommodate the »book reservoir« and additional reading places, whereas the nave comprises the reading realm beneath the huge laylight and serves as access and circulation zone. Moreover, the shape follows the rigid grid of this city quadrat of Mannheim and disparate surrounding buildings: Jesuit church, residential blocks, busy streets.
