"Containing the library and a lecture hall of the Bauhaus University, this two-wing building is set in the middle of a street block, consisting largely of housing, which has undergone many changes in the course of its history. The new structure is skilfully integrated into the street facade and divides the space within the block into a number of different realms that are closely linked with the urban environment. Accessible from three sides, the new complex is articulated into two sections: the main building and an administration tract, with an intermediate structure between the two that also links the various entrance levels. Although the modern formal language distinguishes this development from the historical surrounding fabric, the facade does reflect local building traditions: the dark grey coloration is a typical feature of urban Weimar; in addition, the concrete surfaces were given an irregular hand-worked texture that makes reference to the rendering of older houses in the area.
