The Liljevalchs Art Gallery in central Stockholm is one of Sweden’s most renowned exhibition spaces for contemporary art. Combined with the new expansion named Liljevalchs+ the museum increases in floor space by 2600 m2. Most of all, it gains an exhibition area in which daylight is dramatised in a very special way. This area is situated directly beneath the roof structure resembling a space frame and consisting of 166 exposed concrete lightwells arranged in a homogeneous pattern. They support staging exhibitions that do not require artificial lighting during daytime. At the same time, they establish a unique spatial atmosphere and provide the building volume and its restrained simplicity with a filigree roofline radiating nobility. The facades are closed to a major degree. As a result, the compact new building offers ideal preconditions for presenting works of art.
