Using exemplary floor plans in standard grids, a type catalogue shows how the conversion of vacant office buildings into age-appropriate living space can succeed. Office-based work culture is in decline and working environments are redefining themselves, with this development being significantly accelerated by the current lockdown. The number of unused commercial buildings is expected to increase again in the future, following a recent downward trend. Between 2011 and 2019, the vacancy rate for office space in Germany's seven largest cities was around 6 %. Attention was therefore already being paid to this building type with regard to its potential for conversion into residential accommodation in response to the increasing housing demand in urban centres.
