The traditional Japanese house – light, flexible and with a clear design – served as a model for this dwelling type. The equal spacing of the columns and the standardized internal finishings all helped to achieve the desired goal. With a structure based on a 1.5 x 1.5 m grid, the Mima House consists of two main modules: a studio 18 m2 in area and a loft-like space (36 m2). These can be assembled to create various configurations, whereby the client can do much of the planning himself, using a 3D online program. The software generates a model, taking account of the site form and the desired floor area. The standardized elements and finishings are then determined. Mechanical service systems are integrated in a similar way. The client can also keep a check on expenditure. The architects address further aspects relating to the site and obtaining building permission.
