J. P. Kleihues' proposal for the museum was awarded first prize in an open competition and built in the years 1986 to 1989. The rehabilitation programme does not curry favour with the tastes and expectations of all people like so many similar objects in the past. Here the architect was not confronted with the arduous task of creating a new building that in itself is a work of art, but challenged instead with a circumspect approach to the restoration of the beautiful and well-preserved Gothic Carmelite Church and St. Anne Chapel and the cloister ensemble, and the addition of new wings.
