The gap-site was located in a 19th century urban extension area in the west of Stuttgart. The location is characterized by four-to-five-storey detached residential houses at a regular distance of 3 metres from each other, which resulted in the block development typical of Stuttgart. Due to the topographical situation in Stuttgart where streets have vastly differing slopes, it is the plinth area of both existing and new buildings that has to absorb these differences. The cubical shape of existing as well as new buildings, their additive structure of balcony and oriel elements and the special way in which attic storeys are dealt with, make up the constituent elements of existing and new buildings.
