The New Royal Theatre in Copenhagen occupies a very prominent position on the harbour. The tall brick face of the auditorium is a direct reference to the old warehouses in the area, while the glazed level for artists with its storeyheight steel load-bearing structure forms a distinct element that cantilevers out over the water. Rising above this is the copper-clad fly tower. The auditorium and main stage space might almost have been carved out of a solid brick volume. Here, the aim was to create a sense of magic and intimacy for an audience of up to 650 people, while at the same time complying with acoustic needs.
