Long promenades on ramps and stairs are an inherent feature of Stirling's museum buildings. On the occasion of the opening of the Clore Gallery in London, he interpreted the way that allows passage to and from the entrance hall to the upper storey as the "praeludium to the galleries". Just like in London, Stuttgart's galleries are situated on the upper storey. Dissociated from the information stand in the entrance hall, a large self-supporting ramp leads upward; at its bend it rests on a mere pencil-like column.
