The character of the region around Bezau in Vorarlberg is formed by the imposing mountain backdrop. The building no. 70 Kriechere, which stands on the main street of the same name in this small village, belongs to the tradition of houses in the Bregenzerwald area. These houses consist of front building, barn and rear building; the living accommodation, stables, and storage spaces all share a common roof. But within this typology this building is a special case. In the 1920s the photographer family Hiller set up a photography studio and shop in the former cow byre, later the daughter Hedwig Hiller had it modernised by architect Leopold Kaufmann.
