Taking its cue from traditional Hamburg office buildings, floor space in this administration block can be freely divided into office units of varying size. French windows can be opened onto the balconies overlooking the courtyard gardens, so reducing dependence on artificial air conditioning systems. Each office also has a view over the town. In the comb-like structure of the building there are two glazed Courtyards. Access to the upper storeys is via glass lifts and sculptural winding steel staircases at the rear of the building. Each stair has 120 steel steps with granite treads, echoing the flooring in the halls. The strong tone of the fair-faced brickwork contrasts with' the vegetation. Sun, light and shade are brought into the building via the glazed roof.
