This former carpet factory in London’s East End has been converted to provide facilities for start-up firms. Containing both open-plan offices and smaller workspaces, the building opens on to the street in the form of a tubular acrylic glass structure that houses a cafe and restaurant. With room heights of less than 2.30 m on the lower floors, lightweight woodwool soffit slabs were installed as sound insulation.

Rounded surfaces lend the existing two-storey spaces more elan, and curved acrylic-glass spatial divisions help retain views of more than 45 m through the building. The heart of the co-working area – an open-plan office for 70 persons with a 1.2-tonne pull-up table – can also be used for other activities.
