The premises, on the top floor of a converted garage, contain administration offices and a music room for the pop group, the Pet Shop Boys. The existing split level arrangement was exploited to form two distinctly different characters of space to respond to their different functions. Both levels are linked by the curved stair, which takes its inspiration from traditional Japanese bridges. The staircase is freestanding, resting lightly on radiused feed at each end. This simply resolves the different angles of contact in one common detail, enabling its future relocation to a different site without need for modification. The ash treads form an integral part of the structure spanning between two independent curved steel side members.
