Back in 2002 an attempt was made to improve the quality of this space as somewhere to spend time by introducing new planting and by placing semi-circular bench seats along its outer edges. The working partnership of MSA and Ney & Partners obtained the commission for the recent redesign through a negotiation procedure.
Contrary to the original wishes of the authorities, whose principle requirement was the provision of sheltered waiting areas at the tram stops, their intervention was concentrated on the centre of the space. where they made a new bridge between the two halves.
