Only seven years ago, the bus station – appreciated today as a prime example of post-war British brutalism – was seriously threatened with demolition. Despite the protests of citizens, the city of Preston wished to replace it with a shopping centre.
Rescue manifested itself after the building was adopted as a listed structure in 2013 at the suggestion of the Twentieth Century Society. In 2016, an architectural competition was held for the redevelopment of the station, which was won by John Puttick Associates. In addition to a restrained rehabilitation, their commission included the redesign of the open area to the west as a zone free of vehicles.
