The combination of a market hall and supermarket beneath a single roof has now established itself in Spain. The supermarket helps not only to finance the market, allowing low costs for the stands; it also extends the range of fresh products and attracts customers. In Torrent, a town outside the walls of Valencia, a complex has been created that also includes a civic hall, shops and a restaurant.

This large volume is harmoniously integrated in the surroundings and presents the Moorish tower that dominates the marketplace with an appropriate counterpart. Initially, the town also planned a multistorey housing block with a basement garage in the square, but the project went amiss as a result of the financial crisis. Only the market hall was realized some years later, thanks to a state loan. The absence of parking spaces makes the leasing of the areas difficult, and the town is looking for alternative solutions. Both the large civic hall and the noble market hall and cafeteria are already very popular.

A glazed entrance space with slender aluminium louvres links all storeys and in the evening becomes a festive foyer for the various events staged internally. Large sliding doors allow an independent use of the various levels at different times. In the meantime, parking spaces have been created on a second basement level, so that the rest of the building will doubtless be filled with life before long.
