The project involves the modernization and redesign of the more than 600 regional railway stations in Switzerland and forms part of a programme of automatization. A series of standardized elements has been created – including a waiting room, a cycle stand, and information wall units – which can be adapted to local needs. The ensemble is comple-mented by a so-called “rail beam” – a metal column that can be illuminated at night and that marks the station entrance. The present location is a rural station in the canton of Fribourg. The design of the cubic structures is deliberately restrained, avoiding unnecessary projections or variations in materials. With the use of glass, aluminium and exposed concrete, an attempt has also been made to prevent vandalism. Greater security at night is provided by large-area indirect lighting. The concept includes the design of the external areas, with seating and other street furniture.
