Foster Associates' additions and alterations to the Royal Academy, as well as revitalization of the Diploma Gallery into the Sackler Gallery open a new chapter in the history of the Academy's building, the historical Burlington House and create outstanding new exhibition space for London. The Sackler Galleries represent a radical remodelling of the Victorian Diploma Galleries, which were relatively little used because of their inadequate servicing and poor access. The new galleries, created in the shell of the old, naturally-lit from above, with a sophisticated system of louvres to monitor light levels, are fully air-conditioned and thus suitable for the display of prestigious loan exhibitions.?
