In the densely populated residential district Shinjuku, because the sites are extremely small and building heights are restricted, every centimetre counts. This also applies to a house, situated at a small intersection, which manages to yield 86 m2 living space on a 44 m2 site. Rather than extruding the largest allowable footprint – as most neighbours do – Atelier Tekuto has created a sculptural building which recalls a cut stone or carefully folded origami. The bright white concrete envelope provides few clues as to how the interior is structured. Interlocking floor levels, polygonal window openings, and oblique walls and roofs camouflage the actual dimensions and make the residence appear much larger than it is.
