With its countless mountains and fjords, Norway is full of attractions, big and small. In order to make the multifaceted landscape more accessible to visitors, the state road administration began in 1994 to establish various tourist routes (in Norwegian: turistveger); today there are 18 designated “Scenic Routes”. Picnic areas and overlooks have been established along these particularly beautiful, often secluded stretches of road, inviting tourists to discover the varied landscape. They include tourist-oriented infrastructure, such as toilets and seating, while secured paths and bridges offer possibilities to experience natural attractions such as waterfalls at close range.
