When architectural students are given the opportunity to implement their own concepts, they are encouraged to consider the technical and economic feasibility of their designs at an early stage. The increasing number of participatory construction projects in Third World countries allows abstract design tasks to be turned into a genuine involvement in architecture on a social level. A striking example of this is the South African township of Orange Farm, a settlement of metal huts on the outskirts of Johannesburg where, it is estimated, up to a million black people live.
