"Laid out orthogonally with four straight sides, the new stadium was designed as a compact volume so as not to dominate the park landscape in which it stands. The tiers of seating as well as the load-bearing structure consist of precast concrete elements, which helped to achieve an economical, flexible form of construction that can be adapted to future needs. The demolition of the old stadium and the construction of the new were carried out in a number of stages during a full programme of events. The four stands were erected in separate phases together with the stadium roof. The latter is a suspension structure spanned between four 60-metre-high steel corner towers that are illuminated at night. In the outer areas, the roof is covered with ribbed metal sheeting; over the inner areas, there is a transparent polycarbonate covering that allows daylight to penetrate to the grass playing field. Spectators enter the stadium at the four corners and ascend open, covered staircases to reach their seats. Access to the VIP areas in the western stand is via a separate foyer."
