The bridge is conceived as part of the redevelopment scheme for an extensive central area of Barcelona, on the edges of the Plan Cerda, spanning the railway lines that come in form the north. This redevelopment scheme on an urban level takes as its theme two major interventions: the creation of a large park alongside the railway and the linking up of the Felipe II and Bach de Roda streets, at present separated by the railway, thereby permitting direct access to the sea.
