At the centre of an area to be upgraded with new office buildings, housing and cultural facilities, the Cervantes Theatre »winds« its way eight storeys into the ground. The only visible part of this development is the sculptural steel roof, a large grid structure constructed with interlocking two-layer 12 cm flat-steel members 2.85 m high and set at various angles to the vertical. The girders and columns were welded together at works, preassembled in a trial run and adjusted. Only then was the final roof structure erected on site on an enormous assembly scaffold.
