The Rucksack House offers a way of improving housing quality on an individual basis. It is also an attempt to explore the boundary between architecture and art. Like a rucksack, the timber-clad steel cage is suspended from steel cables that run over the roof of the existing building and are anchored in the rear facade. Within the cube, one has the impression of “floating” outside the confines of the actual dwelling in a space filled with light. Elements can be folded down from the wall to form furnishings. Realized as a temporary exhibition installation, the volume is not thermally insulated. Additional structural measures can be implemented in accordance with the relevant building fabric.
