This low, linear building mediates between open fields and a group of 1970s apartment blocks on the edge of the village of Niederhasli, outside Zurich. Exposed concrete inside and out lends a strong material presence, particularly on the facade, in the hall and in the top-lit staircases. In the classrooms the concrete is complemented by the warm beech of the furniture and all-over panelling, creating a calm, cosy atmosphere. Beech is also used on the classroom facades. The layout of the school is designed for easy extension, as the population of the village is expanding rapidly. Further sections, consisting of a staircase, two classrooms and a group room, can be built on as required.
