The clear, compact volume of this house, with its steeply pitched roof and concise eaves and verge details, reveals a sensitive handling of everyday architectural vocabulary that refutes first impressions. The roof lights are bold box-like elements; the untreated mahogany windows sit slightly proud of the facade; and the glass is adhesive fixed flush with the frames without beads. Only the recessed entrance door complies with the conventional punched form of opening. The 24 cm brick outer walls are covered with a thermal skin of smooth, untreated rendering. The irregularities of the various stages of work were left visible, so that the surface has a distinct vitality. At the verge, the facade abuts the thin layer of plain roof tiles?in a classically elegant line.
