When the Kampfmeyer mills moved to the outskirts of Berlin they vacated an exposed, centrally located area with buildings that corresponded to the special functional requirements for the operation of mills. These buildings, warehouses, silos and mills with their picturesque silhouettes reminiscent of bygone times when the waterway was the major means of transport, proved unfit economically for conversion and new use. The brief required an up-to-date forward-oriented use as well as an urban planning and new design concept for the entire area.
