Sustainable rainwater management combines measures for evaporation, infiltration and temporary storage of rainwater through to delayed return to the natural water cycle. Rainwater is seen as a resource to be retained, stored and evaporated where it falls. Ideally, a city should be able to absorb it like a sponge after a downpour. The list of possible measures ranges from neighbourhood planning to individual measures on houses or properties. Architects and landscape planners, civil engineers and urban water management experts, together with local authorities and building owners, are consequently tasked with implementing the necessary green and blue infrastructure in existing and new buildings.
