De Leerexpert is a special education school in the Flemish community of Brasschaat near Antwerp. The longitudinal brick building has been in use since the 1950s as a facility for tutoring and supervising children and adolescents with severe physical and mental disabilities. For the architecture office of Compagnie-O, the necessary modernisation of the building became an opportunity to upgrade the existing structure and expand it in a diversified manner. The result is a building ensemble that comprises a tailor-made range of therapeutic and educational services for all age groups.
