Straw is a natural product that displays excellent insulating properties. It is increasingly used as construction material, such as in the case of the residential development in Nänikon, a village near Greifensee in the canton of Zurich. Straw possesses obvious advantages: It is a residual agricultural product and practically available everywhere. It is cost-efficient and permits recycling without difficulty. The thermal transmission coefficient is comparable to mineral wool, while straw is significantly less expensive.
