These two new four-storey halls of residence contain 32 single flats, 8 two-person and 16 four-person dwellings for students of the University of Technology, Munich, in faculties outside the city centre. Flexibility is achieved by furniture on rollers, while adjustable fabric blinds allow the regulation of lighting and viewing conditions. Students can thus choose between complete withdrawal and an openness for encounter on the access galleries, which also function as balconies. A stainless-steel net drawn round the entire building serves as a safety barrier. In the balustrade area, the mesh spacings are tighter, thereby creating a lively and varied structure. In the course of time, the netting will be covered with a layer of foliage in the form of Virginia creepers. These will provide shade in summer, while in winter, when the plants shed their leaves, more light will be able to enter the dwellings. The changing colours of the foliage – from verdant green in summer to the warm reds of autumn – will create a pleasing contrast to the restrained grey of the tapering balcony slabs and the inset glazed facade with its black aluminium doors. The staircase access routes at the open ends of the buildings are protected by the canti-levered slabs. The zigzagging line of the concrete staircase balustrades, together with the stainless-steel netting, lends the development a character of its own.
