This tea house is an addition to a wooden rowhouse. From outside there is no hint of its existence. A vaneer of Japanese linden is the main material used for the floor, walls and ceiling of the interior of this tea house. One approaches the tea house through the older building and is suddenly drawn inside. This older part is a passageway to the separate world that is the tea house and serves the same function as the »roji«. In this process of passage, one experiences a number of reversals of expression. The various devices installed in the entrance to the tea house and the six sides of the tea house proper- i.e. the floor, walls and ceiling - are intended to bestow a deeper significance to very simple functions. The intention is to give an infinite depth to a minimal space.
