Microarchitecture lies at the interface between architecture and product design. Its precise scale makes serial production a viable option where larger numbers of an object are required. To avoid the need for storage and to provide the individuality that is associated with architecture (mass customization), clearly defined parameters are developed within which the client can formulate a design that will reflect personal needs (“parametric design”). A prototype of this ESG pavilion (endless space generated by individual sections) was designed and constructed within a period of four months. The pavilion consists theoretically of an infinite number of segments. A system was developed for the design of the segments based on geometric principles: the deformation of a rectangular cross-section allows the creation of various configurations and individual “furnishing contours”.
