Steel comes in the form of partly fabricated units that are then joined together in the workshop or on site. To avoid extensive site work, account has to be taken of the nature and execution of the connections at the design stage. As a result, jointing becomes a significant aspect of the design process and can be consciously exploited as such. Whether the jointing is concealed to achieve a “pure form” or is utilized as an element of the design is often not a question of the technology involved, but a matter of aesthetic expression. The sculptures of Anatol Herzfeld and Anish Kapoor illustrate these contrasting approaches to the subject of jointing steel. Herzfeld’s volume consists of individual steel plates with different patinas and with clearly visible, roughly welded joints.
