The greatest challenge facing mankind today is to control the extent of global climate change. Buildings account for roughly 45 per cent of the energy consumption in the world and are thus responsible for a major part of CO2 emissions. A disaster can be averted only if less energy is used in buildings and if they are capable of exploiting renewable forms of energy. Ideally, they should be able to generate more of it than they use.
