Roughly two years ago, as one of the first German architectural practices, the Berlin office of Gerber Architekten began a comprehensive and fully-integrated BIM project. In other words, all design and planning sequences were converted to parametric processes and  based on algorithms. A commission for the planning of a metro station in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, started things rolling.

In the coming years, this rapidly-growing capital is to acquire a completely new metro system with an approximately 176-kilometre route network and more than 80 stations. The three main stations were advertised in an international competition in 2012.

The central Olaya Metro Station was awarded to Gerber Architekten, while the other two were won by the Norwegian Snøhetta office and by Zaha Hadid Architects. (Thomas Lücking mit Jasmin Dieterle, Julijana Nikolovska-Steimle, Steffen Schünecke, Luigi Serra, Tanay Swarupam)
