The quest for intelligent, functional finishes is an important aspect of modern materials research. Finishes are now capable of deflecting dirt and are self-cleaning. They can eliminate contaminants in the environment, or, when tears or breaks occur, deploy their self-healing properties. They also combat bacteria posing health risks. Following years of comprehensive research, functional finishes are now gradually moving past the test phase into architectural practice.
