Rusty sheet pile walls constitute the protective shell of the
Schwere Reiter theatre building. They provide the structure with an unmistakeable identity. The rough and robust exterior corresponds to the experimental functional character of the building. It is home to the Schwere Reiter artist cooperative, active in the fields of dance, theatre and music and is understood as a space for experimentation for the Munich free art scene. The rusty steel hull also harmonises with the rough charm of the heterogeneous surroundings consisting of historic buildings, industrial halls and provisional container structures. In the last 20 years the site, formerly occupied by the Luitpold Barracks, developed into a vivid location for the culture scene, featuring many studios and workshops. The area northwest of the old town of Munich is currently known as the Creative Quarter.
