Generally, dilapidated buildings in inner city locations that are not under a preservation order are demolished and replaced by new buildings. With the town house in Linz that they acquired for their own architecture practice Mia2 Architekten took a different approach. The result is a model of sustainable renovation and increase in density that was achieved without cramping the planted courtyard. The reconstructed historic double windows, the additional storeys that extend the building up to the eaves level of the neighbouring house, and the inviting bench seat in front of the office entrance enhance the quality of the street facade. Atmospheric spaces for the architecture office have been made below the vaulted ceilings to the ground and first floors. Despite their limited floor area, the eleven compact rental apartments seem generous thanks to the bespoke built-in fittings.
