The church of St. James in Pullach, an exclusive residential suburb in the southwest of Munich, was built after the Second World War. The formal language was decidedly austere and sober and the room height was too low to radiate the ambience that churchgoers expect in a place of worship. In the course of the interior alterations in 1985, therefore, the existing ceiling was removed and the exposed timber roof construction rendered both the desired height and a new atmosphere of warmth and reliance.
