A young couple required a garage to accommodate not only their two cars and their bicycles, but also a snowblower and other equipment. They wished it to be built of timber, a renewable material in plentiful supply locally in the forests of the Erzgebirge on the border between Germany and the Czech Republic. The clients were also receptive to a distinctive built form. In collaboration with the timber construction firm, the architect designed a structure consisting of planks in horizontal layers. Leftover wood from various sources was used instead of freshly cut timber. The material consisted of boards of all kinds: long and short, broad and narrow, thick and thin, old and new.
