Inspired by the simple elegance of a Japanese bamboo umbrella, the architect designed this 6-kg folding object for the tea ceremony. The translucent rice-paper skin facilitates an even distribution of light, but allows no view out. Based on a diameter of 2.75 m, the pavilion has a self-supporting structure consisting of 5 x 10 mm strips cut from one bamboo cane. The floor and roof are constructed like spoked wheels with 50 struts extending radially from the central timber hubs at top and bottom and linked by vertical staves 2.20 m long. If the tatami mats and plywood flooring are removed and the teahouse is lifted vertically, it can be folded up like an umbrella to form a cylinder only 20 cm in diameter for transport.
